Pierre-François Basan ( Paris 1723-1797) was an important figure in the 18th-century world of printmaking. He was an engraver, expert and publisher. He brought Rembrandt to France, publishing one of the first engraved collections of his works, printed on his original copperplates. At the request of Etienne-François, duc de Choiseul (1719-1785) Basan (1723-1797) made a catalogue of his collection.
Very scarce first edition of large luxury edition in very good condition. There is also a smaller edition of this publication. The smaller formats may be slightly later editions, used as an auction catalogue. After all, a sale took place in April 1972, organized by the expert J.F. Boileau.Several smaller copies have been identified that are described with amounts representing the auction proceeds.
