Sepp en Zoon, De Beruk & Smits etc.; 423 installments; large 4to (25 x 31/33 cm); engraved title page with contemporary handcoloured title vignette; 2085 (of 2096) full page contemporarary handcoloured (a few col. aquatint) engravings / chromo lithographs with accompanied text in French and Dutch. First 8 volumes kept in contemp. gilt lettered half roan / half calf portfolio's with ties; the other 18 volumes kept in modern half cloth portfolios with ties. Installments issued loose-leaf in original wrappers. Added: some sheets with notices of the editor during this edition and a memoir to the occasion of the dying of Frederik van Eeden (one of the authors).




Lacks installments 173 and 174 (with 10 plates), 422-425 and plate 926. Kept in very good and condition; only a few lithographs with marginal defects. Some wrappers with small tears or frayed. Despite these small defects a very attractive and large run which seldom is offered.



The Flora Batava is the most extensive illustrated flora of The Netherlands.This impressive series not only shows endemic Dutch plants but also various species of mushrooms and lichen aswell. Often the place is mentioned where the plants have been found, what the slang names are of the plants and their usage. The first 24 volumes all have engraved and lithographed plates, all coloured by hand. After volume 24 colour printed illustrations were gradually introduced.



The sought-after large 4to-edition with index volumes. The series continued up to 1934 (vol. 28) with a total of 2240 plates. Landwehr, Dutch Books Col. plates; Nissen BBI 2247; Pritzel 4822; Sitwell / Blunt, Freat flower books 1700-1900, p. 63.
